Thomasina Bateman, an antiquarian is at present writing a novel about the barrows in England. The book will record the treasures that she discovers within. In the event that an interesting letter brings her to the tiny village of Bewlay, tucked away in the remote countryside, she sets off by train along with her friend a day behind.
The mysterious man that summoned her to her rescue is absent upon her arrival. Her assistant never arrives. An uncompromising landowner denies access to his barrow and locals are suspicious of this woman who is travelling on her own as well (gasp!) wears trousers.
The dig of Hob’s Barrow is off to an uneasy start. Then Thomasina begins to have strange dreams…
